In Hanoi, Mr. Tran Dinh Nhan – General Director of Electricity of Vietnam (EVN), and Mr. Seiji Kawamura – Executive Director of the Oversea Power Business Board and Executive Director in charge of the Asian power market of the Japanese Marubeni Group discussed the signed MOU and start cooperation programs for reducing carbon emissions. Marubeni is the first group to sign MOU with EVN on carbon liquidation.

In COP 26, Vietnam committed to carbon neutrality by 2050. This goal set up for the electricity sector the very large challenges as ensuring power supply for socio-economic development and reducing CO2 emissions and reducing the environmental impact of electricity activities.

According to the Draft Power Development Planning VIII (PDP VIII), after 2030 year in Vietnam not develop new coal thermal power plants (CTPPs), but there will be more than 30 GW of CTPPs and 39 GW of LNG thermal power plants. Therefore, EVN needs to make solutions to reduce CO2 emissions for the EVN existing coal TPPs by increasing their efficiencies, transiting to use biomass fuel, and researching the technologies for CO2 capture and storage technologies in developed countries.

Mr. Nhan also considered that, in the condition of limited ability, experience in finance. It is necessary to maximize opportunities for technology transition and financial support from developed countries, especially in the de-carbonization like Japan. In the coming time, on the base of the signed MOU, EVN and Marubeni will cooperate to come up with a concrete action plan including:

1/ Researching and applying carbon reduction for EVN coal-fired thermal power plants.

2/Developing renewable energy projects (solar and wind/onshore and offshore power projects) and new energy such as biomass and hydrogen projects.

3/ Sharing information and international experience in electricity market operation.
