NDO – Vietnam Renewable Energy Week 2020 was jointly launched by the Vietnam Sustainable Energy Alliance (VSEA), the Vietnam Coalition for Climate Action (VCCA), the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) and partners in Hanoi on August 25.

The four-day event, the fifth of its kind held in the country, carries the message of “Breakthrough to recovery and green development for a peaceful life”, and is aimed at introducing solutions to promote sustainable energy development, ensure energy security, remove barriers, and promote green economic recovery and growth.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Director of the Green Innovation and Development Centre (GreenID) Nguy Thi Khanh said that Renewable Energy Week is an annual event initiated in 2016 in an effort to contribute to the transition to clean energy in Vietnam.

After four years, the programme has become a forum for stakeholders from central to local levels and people in the community to interact, exchange, and contribute initiatives, ideas, actions and proposals for sustainable energy development in Vietnam, she stated.

Cecile Leroy, representative of the European Union (EU) delegation to Vietnam, noted that the EU is currently focusing on the field of clean energy, thus staying ready to cooperate with partners in the fulfillment of goals on energy sustainability and green development.

The EU has signed many cooperation deals with the relevant Vietnamese ministries to promote sustainable energy transformation, she said, affirming the bloc’s willingness to share experience with the country regarding project expertise, finance and legal frameworks for green recovery and development.

Over recent years, the Vietnamese Government has issued policies and mechanisms to promote renewable energy development, such as the renewable energy development strategy, the mechanism to support the purchasing price of biomass, solar and wind power, increasing the number of wind and solar power projects, and preparing a mechanism on solar auctions in the time ahead. Up until now, Vietnam’s total renewable energy power capacity in operations has reached approximately 6,000MW, of which there are over 31,000 rooftop solar power projects with a combined capacity of 700MWp. Vietnam is becoming known as a leading country in terms of renewable energy growth in the ASEAN region.

Vietnam Renewable Energy Week 2020 will focus on the following topics, namely “Rooftop solar power development in Vietnam: Benefits, bottlenecks and solutions”; “Clean energy transition: Global trends and local action”; and “Clean energy development in Vietnam: Expected Breakthroughs”.
